How to Create a Strong Password

Updated: Jul 11, 2023

A strong password is one of the most important ways to defend yourself against cyber attacks, whether it's a password for your computer or a phone, app, or software. Strong passwords can help protect your accounts from being hacked, which can lead to identity theft, financial loss, and other problems.

How to create a strong password that is hard to crack?

  1. Use a long password - Your password should include a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. This will make it even harder for hackers to crack your password. The longer the password, the harder it will be to hack - see the table below. To come up with such a string, try to think of an expression that means something to you but will be hard for others to guess. You can also make an acronym from it and add special characters. You can substitute numbers or symbols for letters. For example, you could use "@" for "a" or "3" for "E."

  2. Do not use personal information - Avoid using your name, birth date, address, phone number, or other personal information in your password. Hackers can easily retrieve this information from your social media profile or leaked information online. That is the first thing hackers will try to use to crack your password.

  3. Avoid using sequential numbers or letters - For example, "1234" or "abcde."

  4. Use unique passwords - If you use the same password for several accounts, once a hacker reaches your password, your whole digital life will be accessible at his fingertips.

  5. Use a password manager - A convenient way to keep your passwords. Known password managers: Free password managers: KeyPass, Google password manager. Paid password managers: Last pass, 1 password.

  6. Use two-factor authentication (2FA) - A strong password is not enough. Use 2FA in all of your accounts.

Many of us put off the assignment of choosing a strong password, but as much as we use more apps, and create more accounts, the risk of being hacked increases. So using these tips and investing in building strong, unique passwords is essential.
